CREDO
By Wayne Martin Mellinger, PhD.
Within the embrace of Dionysian Naturalism, my philosophy and spiritual path unfold as a vibrant tapestry woven from the threads of Religious Naturalism, Pagan traditions, Druidry, radical ecological consciousness, and liberation theologies. Dionysian Naturalism is a mystical journey that joyously celebrates life's ecstatic dimensions, particularly through the mindful use of entheogens that open doors to profound spiritual experiences and deeper understanding.
At its core, Dionysian Naturalism reveres the Wheel of the Year, marking the sacred cycles of nature with rituals that harmonize human life with ecological rhythms. Influenced deeply by Druidic teachings, this approach underscores an unwavering commitment to the sanctity of nature, urging the restoration and liberation of our planetary home alongside the spiritual and social liberation of humanity.
In addition to my active involvement with local Druidic and Pagan communities, I have been a member of the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara since 2005. The principles of Unitarian Universalism—its embrace of pluralism, reverence for reason, commitment to justice, and affirmation of the interdependent web of life—have had a profound impact on my thinking. This influence is woven throughout Dionysian Naturalism, especially in its emphasis on democratic engagement, spiritual diversity, and the integration of scientific and spiritual worldviews.
My essays and reflections journey into vast cosmologies, exploring the sacred narratives of the Epic of Evolution and illuminating the intricate dance between science and spirituality. I delve into revolutionary ecological praxis, the transformative potential of ritual and contemplation, prophetic wisdom, and the illuminating clarity of gnosis.
The following principles form the heart of my Credo, each a guiding star that illuminates this spiritual path, inviting deeper introspection, communal harmony, ecological stewardship, personal transformation, and democratic engagement:
1. We honor the interconnectedness of all things, seeking to live in harmony with the natural world and its sacred rhythms, attuned to the cycles of the Earth and cosmos.
2. We embrace the mystery that lies at the heart of existence, honoring the unknown as a profound source of wonder, awe, and continual revelation.
3. We cultivate insatiable curiosity and boundless openness, celebrating diverse perspectives as gateways to growth, wisdom, and expanded consciousness.
4. We uphold pluralism as sacred, nurturing tolerance, compassion, and understanding among individuals of all backgrounds, traditions, and beliefs.
5. We commit to collective flourishing through democratic dialogue and shared decision-making, believing in the wisdom of inclusive community engagement.
6. We cherish and nurture community, understanding deeply that our personal journeys are enriched and fulfilled through collective engagement and shared purpose.
7. We harmoniously weave scientific inquiry with spiritual exploration, recognizing their interdependent roles in unveiling the truths of the universe.
8. We revel in complexity, embracing life's multifaceted truths and resisting simplistic explanations, celebrating nuance and depth.
9. We embody praxis, transforming our profoundest beliefs into actionable rituals and daily practices that ground spirituality in lived experience.
10. We commit wholeheartedly to a sustainability revolution, actively safeguarding the well-being and flourishing of our planet and all beings, while challenging exploitative systems.
11. We pursue continuous personal transformation, recognizing self-growth as an unending, sacred pilgrimage toward authenticity and enlightenment.
12. We honor the visionary power of ecstatic states, prophecy, contemplation, and gnosis, welcoming altered states of consciousness as portals to deeper understanding.
These guiding principles anchor my vision of Dionysian Naturalism, offering a foundation for an awakened, compassionate, and ecologically attuned spirituality. They call for the liberation of humanity and the thriving of our sacred Earth through ritual, justice, shared wisdom, and reverence for the mysteries of being.
