On Progressive Prophetic Activism:
How CLUE Works
Wayne Martin Mellinger, Ph.D.
Religion and spirituality bring to social movements and struggles for social change a moral framework for activism, motivating our work for justice and compassion. They bring communities of faith who passionately support our work and provide us leadership. They give us a sense of purpose.
Ours is a progressive prophetic activism with a vision of the Beloved Community in which all people share the wealth of the Earth. In The Beloved Community, poverty, hunger, and homelessness will not be tolerated because standards of human decency will not allow it. We read religious texts as pointing to the essential dignity and equality of all human beings.
Our hearts belong with those who have been marginalized, displaced and silenced by oppressive institutions. While many of us also engage in charitable works we know that only through structural change do we get at the root causes of these issues.
We believe that the revolution begins with how we live our lives (and run our meetings) and that by modeling compassion and justice we can help to create a better world for all. We are not just fighting for a better world —we are building it one step at a time.
We gather in reverence, a circle of faith, to discern the path of justice. We open with prayer or silence to still our hearts and minds and center ourselves in the Spirit,. We speak a language of reverence, honoring all voices, even those who disagree. For we are all children of the divine.
We use discernment to guide us, seeking wisdom from within to find answers that are aligned with the highest good for all. We use consensus instead of voting for we believe that all voices matter. We are stronger together when we find unity in diversity.
We never attack personalities but focus on the issues at hand. For we are committed to civil discourse and building the Beloved Community. Through these processes we infuse our work with the spark of the divine, transforming political struggle into prophetic activism.
