How to Write a Memoir by Wayne Martin Mellinger, Ph.D.

The Memoir as Sacred Journey:   Lessons from a Life Examined Wayne Martin Mellinger, Ph.D. When students ask me how to write a memoir, I usually begin by telling them what not to do. Do not simply write a chronological account of your life. Most memoirs fail because they become catalogs of events: this happened, then that happened, then something else happened. The reader learns what occurred but never discovers why it matters. When I wrote I Just Wanted to Dance with Dionysus!, I approached my life differently. I treated my own experiences as data. I became both the subject of the story and the investigator of the story. Rather than asking, “What happened to me?” I asked, “What does my life reveal about the culture, institutions, and social worlds I inhabite...

Toward a Systematic Theology of Dionysian Naturalism by Wayne Martin Mellinger, Ph.D

Toward a Systematic Theology of Dionysian Naturalism Sacred Nature, Embodied Presence, and the Refusal of Abandonment E Wayne Martin Mellinger, Ph.D. PROLEGOMENA: The Nature of the Project Dionysian Naturalism is a naturalistic religion of sacred nature that cultivates embodied forms of presence adequate to the beauty, suffering, ecstasy, mortality, and abandonment of the living world — refusing to look away from what is wild, what is dying, and what has been left behind. Dionysian Naturalism is a constructive theological project emerging at the intersection of Unitarian Universalism, Religious Naturalism, contemporary Paganism, Druidry, ecological spirituality, social justice activism, and the human sciences. It is neither denomination nor creed but a coherent theological system organized around a single architectonic principle: Reality invites participation rather than escape. The religious task is to cultivate forms of presence adequate to the beauty, suffering, wildness, mort...

The Shamanic Wisdom Traditions of Controlled Use by Wayne Martin Mellinger, Ph.D.

Image
Shamanic Wisdom Traditions of Controlled Use Wayne Martin Mellinger, Ph.D. Dedicated to my new student David on 3 June 2026    In this essay I advance a sweeping argument that cuts against the grain of contemporary prohibitionist culture. At its heart lies a deceptively simple claim: that human beings once possessed elaborate, socially transmitted knowledge of how to consume powerful psychotropic plants safely, purposefully, and with profound spiritual benefit, and that the destruction of those traditions is the deepest root of the modern drug crisis. This is not primarily a pharmacological or policy document. It is a work of critical social theory and emerging theology, written from within the framework of Religious Naturalism, specifically my own constructive theological project, Dionysian Naturalism — a nature religion grounded in scientific naturalism that refuses to suppress the ecstatic, embodied, and wild dimensions of human spiritual life. The Problem Stated I o...

The Search for Meaning and Truth: My Theology

Image
The Search for Truth and Meaning: My Personal Theology Wayne Martin Mellinger, Ph.D. I. The Laboratory of Necessity I did not begin my search for truth and meaning as a philosophical exercise. I began it because my life had collapsed. In the aftermath of a psychological breakdown, I lost the structures that had once held my life together—health, stability, housing, and eventually any reliable sense of who I was supposed to be. What followed was a descent that ended in hospitalization, homelessness, and addiction to street drugs. Ventura, where I had been living, no longer felt like a place I could return to. I left and made my way to Santa Barbara, not with a plan, but with a fragile hope that something like a life could be rebuilt. The early steps were basic: two weeks in detox, thirty days at the Salvation Army’s Hospitality House, then acceptance into the year-long men’s program at the Santa Barbara Rescue Mission—a structured, Christian-based recovery environment that would become,...
