Santa Barbara Rising--Opening Prayer for CLUE

Opening Prayer for CLUE-SB Board Meeting     Wayne Martin Mellinger, Ph.D.   Spirit of Life, Spirit of Justice, we gather tonight on Chumash land, remembering the first peoples of this place, whose wisdom and struggle echo still in the barrios, the fields, and the streets of Santa Barbara. We meet in a city of palm trees and ocean views, yet more than a thousand of our neighbors remain unhoused. Homelessness is the moral crisis of our times— exposed most starkly when the city moved to close the FARO Center, not because it failed, but because it dared to serve the poorest among us. We see Eastside and Westside families displaced by gentrification, their modest homes bulldozed for luxury condos that only out-of-town investors can afford. We see workers living in cars, waiting for Safe Parking spots that are too few for the need. We see neighbors trapped in the cruel revolving door— from ER to jail cell to shelter and back again— denied the sustained, integrated care ...

Drawing on genealogical threads from Walt Whitman and Edward Carpenter to late twentieth-century pagan and animist revivals, the movement situates same-sex desire and gender fluidity within a cosmology of sacred immanence. Through the development of r...

Sacred Nature Awakened:   Reclaiming the Dionysian in Religious Naturalism My Dream for a Proposed Gifford Lecture Series (8 Lectures) University of St. Andrews 2030 Wayne Martin Mellinger, Ph.D. Some dreams feel too bold to speak aloud—but they have a way of charting the future. If I could stand on the Gifford Lectures stage at St. Andrews in 2030, this is the series I would deliver: a sweeping history and passionate renewal of Religious Naturalism, calling it to awaken its Dionysian soul.   Religious Naturalism (RN) has emerged over the past century as a bold alternative to both theism and reductive materialism, seeking to ground religious meaning, ethical orientation, and spiritual depth within a fully naturalist worldview. Thinkers from Jerome Stone to Ursula Goodenough, Donald Crosby, Wesley Wildman, Robert Corrington, Carol Wayne White, Loyal Rue, and the naturalistic pagans have crafted diverse visions of sacred nature—ranging from evolutionary epics and tragic ...
