The Dionysian Epic of Evolution:  Celebrating Chaos, Ecstasy, and Transformation By Wayne Martin Mellinger, Ph.D. Draft   This essay reinterprets the Epic of Evolution through the lens of Dionysian Naturalism, emphasizing chaos, ecstasy, and transformation as essential forces in the universe’s grand narrative. By integrating scientific insights with a Dionysian perspective, the essay challenges the traditional, Apollonian focus on order and harmony, presenting seven pivotal turning points in evolutionary history through the dynamic interplay of chaos and order. It explores how these forces shape cosmic and biological processes, from the Big Bang to the rise of human consciousness, and advocates for a new mythos that aligns scientific understanding with spiritual depth. Ultimately, the essay offers a framework for integrating science and spirituality, fostering a deeper, more meaningful connection to the cosmos. Introduction The universe’s story is one of breathtaking com...

THE ENDURING RELEVANCE OF DIONYSUS by Wayne Martin Mellinger, Ph.D. In The God Who Comes: Dionysian Mysteries Revisited, Rosemarie Taylor-Perry has crafted a monumental work that reverberates with the raw energy and intoxicating allure of Dionysus, the ancient god of wine, ecstasy, and transformation. This text is no mere academic exercise; it is a labyrinthine journey into the heart of the Dionysian Mysteries, an excavation of sacred rites that challenge the boundaries between the sacred and the profane, civilization and wilderness, self and cosmos. For those of us who seek to cultivate a Dionysian Naturalism, Taylor-Perry's work is an indispensable guide, illuminating the ways in which this ancient deity speaks to the deepest currents of human existence and offers a path toward integration with the rhythms of the natural world. Taylor-Perry begins with a profound exploration of Dionysus as a god of paradox, a figure who simultaneously embodies life and death, chaos and order, ci...

SERIES: THE NEW AMERICAN RELIGIONS OF NATURE,  INTRODUCTION PART 2 Walking the Earth Path:  Exploring the Spiritual Common Core of Nature Religions By Wayne Martin Mellinger, Ph.D. Introduction In this essay, I explore the spiritual and ethical foundation of Nature Religions. This piece continues the exploration of my personal theology, Dionysian Naturalism—a ecstatic religion of Nature which combines elements of Religious Naturalism, Paganism and Druidry.  This essay serves as the second part to my introduction to my series on “The New American Religions of Nature” in which will survey the landscape of nature-centred spirituality has found in contemporary North America.  Nature Religions are a diverse collection of spiritual movements that regard nature as sacred. From Paganism to Druidry, Shamanism to Religious Naturalism, these movements share a commitment to honoring the Earth and cultivating a sense of interconnectedness between all living beings. At their...

The New Saint Peter:  Peter Lamborn Wilson as a Saint of Dionysian Naturalism By Wayne Martin Mellinger, Ph.D. Imagine a saint who preached not in temples, but in temporary zones of freedom—a mystic of the streets, the forests, and the airwaves, speaking through zines, pirate radio shows, and whispered rituals. This is Peter Lamborn Wilson, alias Hakim Bey, whose life and work stand as a model for Dionysian Naturalism—a synthesis of play, rebellion, mysticism, and ecological reverence. Born on October 20, 1945, in Baltimore, Wilson spent his early life surrounded by books and ideas. He attended Columbia University but dropped out, hungry for more than academic knowledge. With the wanderlust of a modern-day shaman, Wilson embarked on a journey through the East, immersing himself in Sufi mysticism and esoteric philosophy. His time in Iran, working with Seyyed Hossein Nasr at the Imperial Iranian Academy of Philosophy, deepened his fascination with Islamic mysticism and heretic...

A Spirituality of Ecstasy:  Dionysian Spirituality and Dionysian Naturalism Wayne Martin Mellinger, Ph.D. Dionysian Naturalism is a spiritual and philosophical approach that seeks to integrate the revelatory and ecstatic aspects of the ancient Greek god Dionysus with contemporary insights into nature, human psychology, and ecology. It bridges the gap between the emotional, ecstatic, and irrational elements of human experience with a naturalistic worldview grounded in the material world. Dionysian Naturalism views spirituality as something rooted in the natural world, with an emphasis on embodied experiences, communal rituals, and deep connections to the rhythms and cycles of nature. It embraces the transformative and liberating aspects of Dionysus, incorporating themes such as ecstasy, transgression, and the dissolution of boundaries into a framework that honors the sacredness of the earth and the web of life (Mellinger 2015a;  2015b; 2015c; 2016a; 2016b; 2018; 2020a; 20...

"Doing Eco-Theology in the Anthropocene"

SERIES: THE NEW AMERICAN RELIGIONS OF NATURE: INTRODUCTION Nature Religions, by which I mean those religions which hold nature as sacred, are thriving across the North American continent, growing at such a rate that there are now more Pagans in the US than Presbyterians. These Nature Religions come in many diverse forms, including multiple forms of Paganism, Druidry, Native American religions, shamanism, Deep Ecology, versions of radical environmentalism, Taoism, some forms of Religious Naturalism and some “New Age” spiritualities. Some adherents of these diverse traditions have supernaturalistic cosmologies unsupported by modern science.   For example, “Hard Polytheists” are Pagans who insist that their Gods are living, breathing anthropomorphic entities with whom they have personal relationships.   In contrast, Religious Naturalists, as part of an emerging religion of Nature ground in a modern scientific worldview, largely reject supernaturalist thinking and typically...
